JUBA, South Sudan — August 29, 2026
South Sudan’s Vice President for the Infrastructure Cluster, Taban Deng Gai, has called for urgent reforms to address land disputes and improve land management in Juba.
Speaking during discussions on land administration, Taban said problems involving land ownership and allocation have become a serious concern as Juba continues to grow.
He called for stronger systems to manage land and reduce disputes among residents, communities, investors and government institutions.
Land disputes have remained a major issue in Juba, where rapid population growth and urban expansion have increased demand for residential and commercial land. Disagreements can involve ownership documents, unclear boundaries, multiple claims over the same property and allegations of illegal land allocation.
Taban stressed the need for authorities to improve the way land is registered and allocated. A clearer system could help residents verify ownership before buying property and reduce the risk of disputes.
Land management is also important for Juba’s economic development. Businesses and investors need clear ownership rules before committing money to construction and other long-term projects.
The issue affects ordinary families as well. For many residents, purchasing land or building a home represents a major financial investment, making reliable land documents and transparent procedures especially important.
The Vice President’s call adds to continuing discussions about how South Sudan’s government and local authorities can improve land administration as Juba expands.
Any reforms would require coordination among national institutions, Central Equatoria State authorities and local administrations responsible for land and urban development.
Further details on specific reforms and when they would be implemented were not immediately announced.
