## NEC Says Funding and Security Remain Major Election Challenges South Sudan's National Elections Commission (NEC) says it has made good progress in preparing for the December 2026 elections. Election commissioners have already been appointed in nine states, with only Malakal still remaining. NEC Chairperson Prof. Abednego Akok said the commission is ready to move forward but needs more funding and stronger security to complete voter registration and other election activities. He said internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees in neighboring countries will also be able to register and vote through special registration centers and South Sudanese embassies. The commission will work with security agencies to assess areas affected by conflict before voting begins. Prof. Akok said the NEC has received some funding but needs more money to finish preparations. He also called on all eligible South Sudanese to register and take part in the elections. The government plans to hold the country's first post-independence general elections in December 2026.
