WARRAP STATE, South Sudan — August 29, 2026
More than 5,000 police officers in Warrap State are undergoing training to prepare them to provide security during South Sudan’s general elections scheduled for December 2026.
The training is being conducted as part of preparations to strengthen election security and help police officers understand their responsibilities before, during and after voting.
According to local authorities, the officers are receiving training on maintaining public order, protecting voters and election officials, securing polling locations and responding professionally to possible security incidents.
Officials said security personnel have an important responsibility to remain neutral and protect all citizens during the electoral process.
The training comes as South Sudan continues preparations for its long-awaited elections. Security remains an important concern, particularly in areas that have experienced communal violence and other conflicts.
Warrap State has faced repeated security problems in recent years, including cattle-related violence, revenge attacks and clashes between communities. Authorities have carried out several security operations aimed at reducing violence and restoring stability.
Preparing police officers for election duties is therefore expected to be an important part of maintaining order as voting approaches.
South Sudan's elections are currently scheduled for December 22, 2026. They are expected to be the country's first national elections since independence in 2011.
The elections are part of the political process established under the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement. However, preparations for the vote continue amid political disagreements and concerns about security and other requirements needed for credible elections.
Authorities have called on police officers and other security personnel to protect civilians and help create a peaceful environment during the electoral process.
