JUBA, South Sudan — September 5, 2026
Central Equatoria State authorities have launched a weekly clean-up campaign in Juba as part of efforts to improve sanitation and reduce illegal waste dumping across the capital.
Deputy Governor Paulino Lukudu Obede launched the campaign on Saturday in Munuki Block A. The initiative follows a directive from Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony declaring every Saturday a general cleaning day across Juba.
Under the directive, residents, businesses and institutions are expected to participate in cleaning their homes, workplaces, streets, drainage areas and surrounding public spaces. Juba City Council says the exercise runs every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
During the launch, Lukudu said keeping Juba clean requires cooperation between the government, residents, businesses and local authorities. He raised concerns about garbage being dumped along roads in Munuki, including Bilpam Road.
Residents have been asked to place their garbage at designated collection points until municipal trucks arrive instead of dumping waste on roads or in drainage channels.
City authorities also warned that sanitation rules will be enforced. Businesses that fail to maintain proper cleanliness could face closure, while people caught illegally dumping waste may face fines or other legal action.
Acting Juba City Council Mayor Jennifer Yabu called on households and businesses to stop dumping garbage and wastewater onto public roads. Municipal officials also urged residents to follow waste collection schedules.
However, community representatives in Munuki said irregular garbage collection remains a challenge. Residents said they are willing to participate but need waste-collection trucks to reach their neighborhoods more consistently. Local leaders also called for improvements to roads and drainage so collection vehicles can access communities more easily.
The campaign is expected to continue every Saturday as authorities work to make Juba cleaner and improve waste management across the city.
