JUBA, South Sudan — October 12, 2026
The United States has condemned an armed attack on World Food Programme (WFP) workers and the forced unloading of humanitarian food assistance in South Sudan's Jonglei State.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 12, the U.S. Embassy in Juba called for accountability and stronger protection for humanitarian workers.
The incident occurred on September 29 in Chuilbong, Ayod County, where armed youths reportedly threatened two aid workers at gunpoint and prevented a river convoy from delivering food to Mogok.
According to WFP, approximately 162.54 metric tons of food assistance were forcibly unloaded. The aid was intended for vulnerable families facing food insecurity.
The United States urged South Sudan's leaders and other parties to ensure safe humanitarian access, prevent further attacks and hold those responsible accountable.
WFP confirmed that the remaining convoy, carrying approximately 291.48 metric tons of food for Ayod South, returned safely to Malakal on October 2.
The incident highlights growing concerns about humanitarian security in South Sudan, where violence continues to disrupt food assistance and essential services.
