AWEIL EAST, South Sudan — September 7, 2026
Authorities in Aweil East County have appealed for urgent humanitarian assistance after prolonged dry conditions damaged crops and left farming communities facing growing food shortages.
County Commissioner Wieu Akeen Akot said the area has experienced an extended lack of rainfall, severely affecting crops planted by local farmers. He warned that many families could struggle to find enough food if assistance does not arrive.
The commissioner described the situation as serious, saying crops in affected areas had dried up before reaching maturity. Farming is an important source of food and income for many households in Aweil East, making poor rainfall particularly damaging for local communities.
Local authorities are calling on South Sudan's national government, humanitarian organizations and other partners to provide emergency support to people affected by the dry conditions.
The situation comes as South Sudan continues to face wider food-security challenges. The World Food Programme says millions of people across the country are experiencing serious levels of hunger, driven by factors including conflict, economic difficulties, climate shocks and displacement.
Northern Bahr el Ghazal, where Aweil East is located, depends heavily on seasonal agriculture. When rainfall is delayed or insufficient, families that rely on their own harvests can face significant food shortages.
The latest reports from Aweil East highlight how unpredictable weather can directly affect rural households. Farmers can lose not only food for their families but also crops they would normally sell to meet other household expenses.
Authorities have not yet provided a verified figure for the number of people affected or announced a specific emergency assistance package.
The county administration is asking for support before conditions worsen, particularly for families whose crops have already failed.
