JUBA, South Sudan — September 22, 2026
South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dissolved the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, ending the administration established under the 2018 peace agreement as the country moves toward general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.
Kiir announced the decision on Tuesday during an expanded presidency meeting in Juba, attended by vice presidents, political party leaders, presidential advisers, ministers and other senior government officials.
The dissolution covers the transitional government and national legislature, while the vice presidents, including First Vice President Riek Machar, have been relieved of their positions. State governments are also affected, with caretaker officials being appointed for the period leading to the election. Kiir remains president during the electoral period.
The major political change comes after Kiir signed amendments to South Sudan's electoral laws. The changes removed requirements that a permanent constitution and national population census be completed before elections could take place, clearing legal obstacles to proceeding with the December vote.
Kiir said the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement had not collapsed and pointed to ongoing election preparations, including civic education, assessment of voter-registration centres and security arrangements. He said voter registration is expected to begin soon.
The development also brought heightened security in parts of Juba on Tuesday. Radio Tamazuj reported increased deployment along major roads, while Eye Radio reported that the Ministries Complex was closed as the country entered the three-month countdown to the election.
South Sudan has not held a national general election since gaining independence in 2011. The December 2026 election is therefore a major milestone, although political disagreements over the electoral framework and preparations remain. Reuters reported that opposition groups have challenged aspects of the recent legal changes.
For people following South Sudan news, Juba news, President Salva Kiir, South Sudan elections 2026, Riek Machar, the South Sudan government and the 2018 peace agreement, the dissolution marks a significant change in the country's political transition.
