JUBA, South Sudan — October 6, 2026
The Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of South Sudan (AGOSS) has launched a blood donation drive at Juba Teaching Hospital to increase the supply of blood for mothers facing life-threatening complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
AGOSS President Idyoro Ikarak said having blood readily available allows medical teams to provide urgent transfusions, particularly for women suffering from anemia or severe bleeding after delivery. Juba Teaching Hospital Director General Anthony Lupai said the initiative, supported by partners, is helping protect patients at risk.
Health professionals have also called for more voluntary blood donations to tackle postpartum haemorrhage, a major cause of maternal deaths in South Sudan. A separate report on the initiative said three women had died from postpartum haemorrhage at Juba Teaching Hospital during the past nine months.
The campaign highlights continuing efforts to improve maternal healthcare in South Sudan and reduce preventable deaths during childbirth.
