JUBA, South Sudan — October 8, 2026
Political interest is growing in Upper Nile State as South Sudan prepares for its historic general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026, the country's first national elections since gaining independence in 2011.
Six prominent political figures have emerged in discussions surrounding the Upper Nile State governorship: Stephen Dhieu Dau, Thon Beny Thon, Deng Joh Angok, James Tor Monybuny, Ayong Awer Lual and Jacob Dollar Rout.
Several of these figures have previously served in senior positions within the national government and Upper Nile State administration, bringing political experience and public recognition to the emerging contest.
The ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) opened its internal nomination process on October 5, with applications expected to close on October 9, 2026.
However, official nominations for the six individuals have not yet been independently confirmed, and their participation remains subject to the relevant party and electoral procedures.
As election preparations continue, attention in Upper Nile State is expected to focus on leadership, peace and security, economic development, public services and the future of Malakal and surrounding communities.
MadeenaJuba will continue following South Sudan's 2026 elections, including developments involving prospective candidates and the Upper Nile governorship.
