BOR, South Sudan — October 11, 2026
Community leaders from Twic East and Duk counties in South Sudan's Jonglei State have agreed to end hostilities following peace consultations aimed at resolving a long-running dispute over fishing islands.
The three-day consultations concluded on Thursday, October 8, with representatives submitting their findings to Jonglei State's caretaker Governor, Moses Majok Gatluak, on Friday.
Biar Mading Biar, who led the Twic East delegation, said community members had agreed to stop fighting and support the government's peace initiative.
Similarly, Elijah Monyhom Wuor, head of the Duk delegation, confirmed his community's commitment to ending attacks and restoring peaceful relations.
The dispute, which began in 2023, has caused deaths, displacement and disruption to livelihoods.
Community representatives also called for reopening roads and implementing previous peace agreements.
Women's rights activist Kenya Mach welcomed the consultations but urged authorities to involve women, youth and civil society in future peacebuilding efforts.
The development offers renewed hope for stability in Jonglei, although the commitments have not yet been independently verified on the ground.
