JUBA, South Sudan — September 24, 2026
Eng. Gieth Kon Mathiang has officially assumed office as Director General of South Sudan’s National Communication Authority (NCA), pledging to improve communication services and expand reliable and affordable connectivity across the country.
The leadership handover took place at the NCA headquarters in Juba, South Sudan, following Mathiang’s appointment to lead the institution responsible for regulating the country’s telecommunications and communications sector.
During the handover ceremony, Mathiang said his leadership would focus on strengthening the communications sector and ensuring that people across South Sudan have better access to reliable and affordable services. He also emphasized cooperation with telecommunications companies and other stakeholders operating in the country.
The National Communication Authority plays an important role in regulating mobile networks, telecommunications services, internet connectivity and the use of communication frequencies in South Sudan. Its work directly affects consumers, businesses, government institutions and technology companies that depend on digital connectivity.
Improving internet and telecommunications infrastructure remains important for South Sudan's growing digital economy. More reliable connectivity can support online businesses, digital payments, education, government services and technology development, particularly as more services move online.
Mathiang takes over the NCA at a time when demand for internet access and digital services in South Sudan continues to grow. Affordability, network coverage and service reliability remain important issues for consumers, particularly outside major urban centres.
The new Director General said the NCA would work with operators and other partners to strengthen the sector and improve communication services for the public.
Further details about specific programmes, timelines or regulatory changes under the new leadership have not yet been announced.
